The Maldives has two seasons, driven by the monsoons: a dry season (northeast monsoon, December to April) and a wet season (southwest monsoon, May to November). But that simple split hides a lot of nuance — and the "best" time genuinely depends on what you want from your trip. Here's the honest picture, month by month.
The short answer: for guaranteed sunshine and calm seas, come December to April. For whale sharks, manta rays, fewer crowds and lower prices, come May to November. The water is 27–30°C year-round, and there's no month when the Maldives isn't beautiful.
The northeast monsoon brings the Maldives' finest weather: calm seas, clear skies, low humidity and minimal rain. Underwater visibility is at its best (often 30m+), making it ideal for snorkelling and diving. This is peak tourist season — resorts are busiest and prices highest, especially over Christmas, New Year and Easter.
The southwest monsoon brings warmer seas, more humidity and more rain — but rarely all-day downpours. Showers tend to be short and heavy, often clearing to sunshine within an hour. Seas can be choppier, particularly on exposed western sides of atolls. Prices drop, crowds thin, and the plankton-rich waters draw whale sharks and manta rays. Post-storm sunsets are spectacular.
Peak dry season. Excellent weather, calm seas, minimal rain. Also peak prices and crowds. Perfect for every kind of day charter. Book well ahead.
Arguably the best month overall — dry, sunny, calm and clear. Ideal for snorkelling, sandbanks and sunset cruises. Still peak season pricing.
Continued excellent conditions with warming temperatures. Great visibility underwater. One of the most reliable months for a charter.
The tail of the dry season and often the warmest month. Superb conditions, though humidity begins to build late in the month. Excellent for water activities.
The transition month. The southwest monsoon can arrive, bringing occasional rain and choppier seas, but many days remain glorious. Prices begin to drop. Plankton blooms start to draw the first mantas to Baa Atoll.
Wet season proper, but a great-value month. Short, heavy showers between sunny spells. Manta season begins in earnest at Hanifaru Bay. Fewer crowds.
Peak manta season at Hanifaru. Rain is possible but often brief. A favourite for marine life enthusiasts. Seas can be lively on crossings.
Manta aggregations continue. Warm, humid, with intermittent rain. A quieter, more affordable month with excellent underwater encounters.
One of the wetter months, but also one of the best for mantas and whale sharks. Great value and dramatic skies. Flexible travellers are rewarded.
Still in the wet season with good marine life. Rain eases towards month's end. Prices remain low. Beautiful, moody conditions.
The transition back towards the dry season. Seas calm, rain reduces, and the shoulder-season value is excellent before December's peak. A hidden gem of a month.
The dry season returns with calm, clear conditions. Prices climb sharply around the festive holidays. Superb weather for every activity.
Whale sharks: Year-round in South Ari Atoll, with December to May offering the calmest conditions for reaching and snorkelling with them.
Manta rays: Present year-round at cleaning stations, but the spectacular Hanifaru Bay aggregations peak June to November, largest around the full and new moon.
Sea turtles: Year-round on reefs throughout the atolls.
Dolphins: Year-round, with spinner dolphin pods reliably found on sunset cruises in every season.

A private charter works in any month, but here's how to think about it:
For flat-calm seas and guaranteed sun: December to April. Best for nervous sailors, families with young children, and anyone whose priority is relaxing on a sandbank in perfect weather.
For marine life: June to November. Best for snorkellers and divers who want whale sharks and mantas, and don't mind occasional rain.
For value: May and November (the shoulder months) often deliver good conditions at lower prices.
For proposals, honeymoons and celebrations: December to April gives the most reliable golden sunsets, though the vivid post-storm skies of the wet season can be even more dramatic. See our complete charter guide →
Our advice, whatever the season: book your charter for early in your trip and leave a buffer day. That way, if the weather turns on your chosen day, there's room to reschedule — and you won't miss out.
If you want the safest bet for perfect weather, come in February or March. If you dream of swimming with whale sharks and mantas, come in July to September and accept some rain as the price of extraordinary marine life. If you want the best balance of good weather, value and fewer crowds, target the shoulder months of May and November.
